Galle Day Tour

Experience the charm of Galle and the southwest coast of Sri Lanka on a day trip from the RIU Ahungalla, Heritance Ahungalla hotels or any other hotel in the southwest.

Our journey begins at Balapitiya with a boat ride on the River Madu to see the biodiversity of the surrounding wetlands, which are home to almost 20 species of birds and a wide variety of reptiles and amphibians, too. With luck, you should be able to spot a range of species during a river safari that'll also take you through mangrove forests. The Madu is dotted with 64 islets, and island hopping is part of the tour. Next up, it's the Meetiyagoda moonstone mine, where you'll learn first-hand the process of mining from the locals.

After the museum visit we will drive you to Talawatta Tsunami Photo Museum to see the impact of the 2004 disaster

Then we'll head to historic Galle. It will enchant you with its layered heritage, quaint streets and hives of artistic activity. Check out the old Dutch church and the beautiful white mosque at the ramparts by the sea. Oh, and the beaches aren't bad, either. Lunch will be in Galle, Then observe the stilt fishermen in Weligama before a final stop at a turtle hatchery. These turtle hatcheries are crucial for the conservation of these endangered creatures, providing a safe haven for eggs to hatch and young turtles to grow strong.

The famous unforgettable river boat safari in Madu River is a must! And yes, don't miss the Fish Spa, Temple Island and Cinnamon Island visit too! This boat trip is one of the best excursions you can take in Sri Lanka. This boat trip will give you the experience of a lifetime and you will be amazed at what Sri Lanka has to offer to every single nature lover.

Turtle hatchery

The Kosgoda Sea Turtle Hatchery is home to five species of sea turtles and other wild marine life. Sea turtles are kept here in Sri Lanka. It is a non-profit organization that aims to conserve sea turtles for the coming generation. Since its founding in 1986, approximately 500,000 sea turtles have been released into the ocean.

Visit the Koggala stilt fishermen and the beautiful beach

Here you can observe the ancient and fascinating custom of using stilts for fishing. These fishermen can often be seen on the beaches at sunset, midday and sunrise. They enter the water with their sticks, attach them to the seabed and balance themselves on a crossbar attached to the stick.

Visit the Dutch city of Galle Fort

The Dutch Fort in Galle is one of the best-preserved sea forts in all of South Asia. UNESCO recognized it in the late 1980s as a unique example of an urban ensemble that was a fusion of European architecture and South Asian traditions between the 16th and 19th centuries.
